5 TIPS TO GET A CLEARER MIX
A Muddy Mix is what you often get when you work in DIY situations. There is congestion in the whole spectrum and no element comes out from the Mix. Each instrument appear to be good in Solo, but just when you bring everything together there is not clarity or punch.
It is time to put your hand back to the mix in order to get every element clear and perceptible. If you have trouble you could try our Professional Online Mixing Service. Otherwise you could follow the next Five Steps.
1. EVERYTHING STARTS FROM THE SOURCE
Do everything you can to get a good sounding recording from the beginning. Work on Amp Settings, Drum Tuning, Way of Playing, Room Choices, Microphones Placement. Everything must sound quite good even without any plugin, otherwise you should change something at the source.
2. ALWAYS CHECK YOUR TRACKS IN SOLO
Mix is a sum of elements: if each separate element of this sum is not good, unlikely the entire mix will be good. Put in Solo each track and try to evaluate which are the useless frequencies for that instrument. Cut that frequencies with your favourite EQ.
3. FILTER IS YOU FRIEND
Often in each track there are undesired bass frequencies and subs. Turn on an High Pass Filter and rise the cut frequency slower until you will hear a difference: stop there! Do this for each element in your mix and you will be sure that there will not be unmotivated congestion in the bass area. Try this even for the Highs with a Low-Pass Filter.
4. DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE PAN
How many times we get that Killer Drum and Bass sound that we wanted? But then, we bring up Guitar and Synths and everything becomes muddy and weak. Try to Pan on the sides Guitars and other Melodic Elements to get extra space and clarity in your mix.
5. SPEND SOME TIME ON COMPRESSION
Compression is never good if used randomly. You have to know how to use it. Remember that a compressor reduce the space between peaks and background of your track: that means that using it you certainly have a better dynamic control, but also more noise floor. Spend some times setting parameters of your compression, it should be different for every element of every song. Be sure that attack and release work in time with the song or the part.
Finally, to get a good mix you should work in a good listening environment. Treat your mixing room in the best possible way and position your monitor in order to avoid flutter reverbs of uneven frequency response.
